How I got there: We spent the morning at the top of Germany's tallest peak, The Zugspitze and then paddled across Lake Eibsee, then off to Munich. From Garmisch it was only about an hour and fifteen minute drive to the hotel.

Where I stayed: Using our World of Hyatt points, we spent 4 amazing nights at Andaz Munich Schwabinger Tor. This hotel is super modern, an extraordinary breakfast and a plush spa and rooftop bar. It is literally across the street from public transportation making getting around Munich very easy. We spent 4 nights.

What I did:

Day 1: Upon arrival we took public transportation to the city center, We briefly walked through the Victuals Market, strolled by the Munich Catheral and gazed up at the magnificent Marienplatz. Then we sat down for dinner at one of the dozens of lively outdoor restaruants.

Day 2: Dachau tour, Walk thorugh Olympic Park and a tour of BMW world.

Dachau Tour - We took a guided tour to Dachau where we heard a lot of history and were shown the grounds.; While the tour was good, I would have rather visited the camp myself. There wasn't much time to read some of the displays, which I would have rather done that be told about the history. https://www.radiustours.com

Olympic Park - Huge park in the middle of Munich with lots of interesting sites from the Olympics, if you time it right there are also tons of events they hold in the park.

BMW World - For BMW enthusiasts and car history buffs, this is a must see. Go to the Welt to see the new cars and merchandise and visit the museum for the vintage cars.

Day 3: Off to Austria for a peek at Mozarts birthplace, a Sound of Music Tour and some time to shop in Salzburg's city center.

We chose The Original Sound of Music Tour and it was so much fun! We stopped at the Von Trapp family house, saw the Abbey, the church where Maria and the Captain were married, the Do-Re-Mi steps, Liesl's gazebo, sang songs from the movie, heard trivia and stopped at several gorgeous Austrian towns. We even drove past Red Bull headquarters called The Volcano! https://www.panoramatours.com/en/salzburg/tour/original-sound-of-music-tour-tour-1a-28/

I wish I had more time to spend wandering around Salzburg, lots of great shops, music, historical sites and fabulous Pizza!

Day 4:

We drove to Berchtesgaden for the sole purpose of taking a tour of the Salt Mines and The Eagles Nest. Again, I wish I had more time to wander around the town and visit the shops.

Salt Mines - We went to Salzbergwerk and took the salt mine tour. This was something my family had done when I was a child and I wanted to recreate the experience for my family. It did not disappoint, we went down two wood slide, learned a lot about salt mining and there was even a boat ride across a lake deep in the salt cave.

The Eagles Nest - Obersalzberg - This area was used as the mountainside retreat for Hitler and other Nazi leaders. It is well worth visiting for the history and despite its dark past, the region is stunning and the views from the top are breathtaking. There are timed busses to and from the top. Pre-ordering is a good idea but you can also make changes depending on your schedule when you are there. https://www.kehlsteinhaus.de/english/

Where I ate:

Hofbrauhaus - A must when visiting Munich. This is the most famous of beer halls, the epicenter of Oktoberfest and a really fun place to eat!

Augustiner Keller - If there is one place to eat that embodied everything you think about when you think about Germany, this is the place! You must take the time to eat here, experience the beer garden, and do not miss a trip down to the Storage Celler. You grab massive pretzels out of boxes (my favorite), watch servers lug huge beer steins 4-6 at a time to tables, and the food is delicious!

Trattoria La Stella - try this place for outstanding pasta and pizza. They don't call Austria Northern Italy for nothing!

Salzbergwerk Cafe - This was a nice stop after our tour and before heading up to The Eagles Nest.
